Psalm 3

1  Lord, how many are my adversaries; ♦︎
   many are they who rise up against me.
2  Many are they who say to my soul, ♦︎
   ‘There is no help for you in your God.’
3  But you, Lord, are a shield about me; ♦︎
   you are my glory, and the lifter up of my head.
4  When I cry aloud to the Lord, ♦︎
   he will answer me from his holy hill;
5  I lie down and sleep and rise again, ♦︎
   because the Lord sustains me.
6  I will not be afraid of hordes of the peoples ♦︎
   that have set themselves against me all around.
7  Rise up, O Lord, and deliver me, O my God, ♦︎
   for you strike all my enemies on the cheek
      and break the teeth of the wicked.
8  Salvation belongs to the Lord: ♦︎
   may your blessing be upon your people.

Habakkuk 2: 5-11

5 Moreover, wealth* is treacherous;
   the arrogant do not endure.
They open their throats wide as Sheol;
   like Death they never have enough.
They gather all nations for themselves,
   and collect all peoples as their own.

The Woes of the Wicked

Shall not everyone taunt such people and, with mocking riddles, say about them,
‘Alas for you who heap up what is not your own!’
   How long will you load yourselves with goods taken in pledge?
7 Will not your own creditors suddenly rise,
   and those who make you tremble wake up?
   Then you will be booty for them.
8 Because you have plundered many nations,
   all that survive of the peoples shall plunder you—
because of human bloodshed, and violence to the earth,
   to cities and all who live in them.

9 ‘Alas for you who get evil gain for your houses,
   setting your nest on high
   to be safe from the reach of harm!’
10 You have devised shame for your house
   by cutting off many peoples;
   you have forfeited your life.
11 The very stones will cry out from the wall,
   and the plaster* will respond from the woodwork.

1 John 5: 1-5, 13-21

Faith Conquers the World

5Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ* has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. 2By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, 4for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. 5Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

Epilogue

13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

14 And this is the boldness we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have obtained the requests made of him. 16If you see your brother or sister* committing what is not a mortal sin, you will ask, and God* will give life to such a one—to those whose sin is not mortal. There is sin that is mortal; I do not say that you should pray about that. 17All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that is not mortal.

18 We know that those who are born of God do not sin, but the one who was born of God protects them, and the evil one does not touch them. 19We know that we are God’s children, and that the whole world lies under the power of the evil one. 20And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding so that we may know him who is true;* and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols.*
